Mail ballot rejections increased in Washington and Oregon following the United States Postal Service changed its postmarking rules.

The new rule resulted in more ballots being rejected because of late postmarks.

Lawmakers reported that, in several Washington counties, the number of rejected ballots more than doubled after the change.

The increase was linked to the Postal Service's change to how it postmarks mail, with consequences for voters who mailed ballots on or before the deadline.
