A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia buried in a coffin grown from mushrooms. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald reported the details on September 7.
The coffin is produced using mycelium, the underlying network of fungi. It breaks down fast and returns nutrients to the soil. People in the funeral industry say that more Australians are now seeking greener burial options, outside of standard graves or cremation arrangements.
